The Other Sofa Table
I seriously forget how much I enjoy building tables, so when a dear friend asked about a sofa table I jumped at the opportunity.
This project was about as simple as they get when it comes to tables. Four, double-tapered legs, with a straight apron and beveled top.
The most difficult part of the project was routing the bevel on the ends of the top, but with the help of a hand plane, that was adjusted in no time.

Sofa Tray Table
Переглядів 3,3 тис.4 роки тому
Nothing is worse than sitting down in the middle of the couch to watch your favorite show and suddenly realize you’ll have to stretch across to an end table to set your drink or snack down. Wouldn’t a moveable little tray table be the perfect item right about then? I did too, so I made one just so I can keep from pulling something while sitting around doing nothing.
Spline Jig for Narrow Stock
Переглядів 1,4 тис.4 роки тому
Miter joints are beautiful, but sometimes they can benefit from a little reinforcement to keep them together. Even with mechanical options such as biscuits, dowels, and possibly even screws or nails, a potentially eye-catching option might be to cut slots across the joint and insert a spline. For a recent project, I needed a jig to cut splines in narrow stock, so rather than building a big sled...
Figured Maple Key Hanger
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 роки тому
“WHERE’S MY KEYS?” is probably the most common question asked in the Vanderlist household, next to “Did you say TACOS?” Since scrap wood projects are some of the best, especially with something as beautiful as the figured maple I used for this project, I was pretty excited to find a great use for it. For certain, this is a project that can be knocked out in no time at all, and is a great idea f...
The Storage Shelf Box Thingee
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 роки тому
With the shoe bench built and in place, it became obvious really quickly we needed some more organization in the back room. Once again I grabbed some stock from the maple stash and decided to build…a box…a box to store some wicker baskets that will hold all sorts of items that seem to just get put somewhere I usually can’t find them. For this project we kept the joinery super simple using nothi...
Resawing Thick Stock with a Tablesaw
Переглядів 14 тис.4 роки тому
I have a bandsaw capable of resawing most of the stock I work with, but occasionally I have pieces wider than it can accommodate. While I have an auxiliary extension for the bandsaw to increase its capacity, it’s time consuming to install, and even then it’s sometimes more of a hassle than it’s worth. In about the same time it would take to set everything up (even with the extension already in ...
561 The Shoe Bench
Переглядів 2,3 тис.4 роки тому
There's nothing like scratching two things off your to-do list with a single effort. In this case it's replacing a real eye-sore of a project (that wasn't as helpful as originally thought.) and also another way to use up some old stock that's just been taking up space for far too long. This version of a shoe bench is great not only because it can store more pairs than the old one, but in additi...
Angled Half Lap on the Tablesaw - sneak peek from "The Shoe Bench"
Переглядів 11 тис.4 роки тому
There are several ways to create a half-lap joint, and I can't claim proficiency at any of them. So when my latest project not only required the joint, but it also had to be angled, it's safe to say I was trying to think of any and every other joinery alternative I could use. Regardless, sometimes you just can't find a replacement for what just works.
560 Benched
Переглядів 2,5 тис.4 роки тому
Who doesn’t have a hodgepodge of wood species sitting around their shop? For certain I do, and sometimes I wish I could swap one piece for another to create a project. In reality, we already mix species in a number of our projects anyways, so why should this one be any different? Sure continuity is important, but sometimes we can make allowances and just work with what we have. In this situatio...
559 Dice Tower and Tray
Переглядів 16 тис.6 років тому
Anyone who plays games involving dice there’s two things you always encounter; 1) they inevitably go flying off the tabletop, or 2) someone claims you threw them in a way that meant you were cheating. Aside from building a gaming table with raised sides like a craps table in Vegas your options can be limited on how to fix the problem. A quick little project I built to help keep the dice in play...

It’s easy to be inspired in the kitchen to make something, and I’m not just referring to food either (okay, maybe I am just a little.) Items for use in the kitchen are popular projects, not only with our spouses but often with family and friends. My wife Samantha has a long list of things she’d like built to help her keep things organized in the kitchen, and at the top of her list is to get rid...
557 The New Workbench is Here!
Переглядів 26 тис.7 років тому
For years I've been saying I was going to build a new workbench for the basement workshop, and after just as many years of not doing it, it's finally happened! The "design" of the bench is simple, and the dimensions are perfect for a smaller shop like mine considering the goal turned from making a monster bench like we've seen in magazines, or elsewhere and instead turned to constructing someth...

555 A simple planer sled
Переглядів 100 тис.8 років тому
For the past several months while I've been on the road for work my wife Samantha has been tackling a kitchen project. I've been helping out where, and when I could, but for the most part it was all her sweat and effort going into it (and before anyone asks, no, I didn't build any cabinets or new doors for the kitchen.) In fact, aside from removing a small partition wall, along with tearing out...
554 Small bowl for holding stuff
Переглядів 6 тис.8 років тому
I can't believe this is happening to me, but I'm getting bit by the turning bug and it's obvious it's contagious! Now that my time in the shop is currently less than it use to be, I really want to be able to knock out a project or two from start to finish, and the lathe is probably one of the one tools where this is entirely possible. In today's episode I'm literally turning some scrap maple in...

If you mean the brake cartridge. Yes it is. This is to show you how to bypass that. So if you say cutting wet lumber putting it in the bypass mode keeps the wet material from triggering the brake cartridge. But be careful of fingers because your vulnerable while doing this.

So good to find your vids still up here Matt, so very cool. I do hope and pray sincerely that you and your wonderful family are doing incredibly well and are being blessed day by day. From when woodtalk began a few months before I first started listening aah how long ago now lol and I went back and listened to the first 10 or so episodes then got totally hooked, then started going through all of yours and Matt’s videos and then Shannon when he arrived, through the sad for us, glad for you time when you left the show to get on with your life with your family and from then right up until I lost my wife to leukaemia in ‘20, and through that time, you guys taught me so much wisdom and such fine techniques that you created in me a half decent fine woodworker. Maybe running into you today is Jesus telling me to get back to doing what you taught me to enjoy so very much. Not for any further compliments I may ever receive for the things I make, but simply because I’ve been given a gift and taught an amazing trade by the finest teachers and woodworkers I could ever have been exposed to. Toss in the new Matt, hey, from tree to fine cabinet, that hurts as far as setting the bar lol, one day lol, add in Rob Cosman and most definitely James Hamilton of Stumoy Nubs fame, what a cool guy and so sharp, reminds me of you in so very many ways. Anyway, thanks Matt, I do pray you and yours are well in these tumultuous times and if you’re ever down under, give us a yell, take care, Phil 😎👍

Fucking useless. The thought of the bypass system was the one thing that kept me thinking about holding my nose and purchasing from the shady company. Knowing the hoops I have to jump through for each and every cut it's an even hard fucking no for me. Stop being lazy about safety people and you won't need gimmicks that don't even stop the source of the vast majority of tablesaw injuries.

Reboot the system. Unplug the saw from the power source for about ten minutes. While the power is unpluged, turn the power switch and start switch on to drain any voltage that might be stored in the system electronics. Turn both switches back off again. Plug the cord in again and start up as usual.
